Photography

For some time I've used a Pentax P30N single lens reflex (SLR) with Agfa CT100precisa slide film and standard 50mm lens - old and heavy but reliable. Filters are permanently used - either 1A ultraviolet or 81A which brightens colours on a dull day.

Variations with Olympus cameras and Kodak and other slide film have not achieved such good results, especially when an early autofocus was tried. However my first SLR, a Russian Zenit, supplied results to be proud of, especially on sunny days when its manual exposures were easily calculated.

Since my first decent photo was taken in black-and-white at the age of eleven, my archive is now quite wide with a large number relating to transport of all kinds, although as I'm away from home about 20% of the time it makes sense to take more common tourist shots also. I'm considering a slide scanner for web purposes, to be able to offer downloads for a fee to cover costs.

For personal photography, I dislike posed photos and feel the best ones result when friends etc are doing something else - eating or chatting in the pub for example. For children and animals I've had good results simply by dropping to the right level rather than looking down!

In transport I prefer the subject to be in context with a wide background and passengers, though not the inevitable uglies who tend to choose the wrong moment to take a walk <g>. Sometimes compositions (including framing) is possible using a photographer's eye. I also specialise in transport architecture with a large number of station photographs, sometimes classic but sometimes not.....
